Marriage register - how big (for scanning)?
« on: Monday 15 January 24 17:08 GMT (UK) »
I want to visit my local record office to scan some 1950s marriage registers from a church.

I think registers had been standardised by this time, and were centrally supplied.

Does anyone know how big they are (so I know what camera lens to use) ?

I've got several images (from family search and ancestry) but none of them have scaling item on!

Hah - to answer my own question I found one that had been microfilmed with a scale on.

Each page is 14 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches deep (A3 is 16.5 by 11.7)

Chances are you'll only be able to access microfilm anyway... our archive office doesn't allow access to the originals.

Not sure you'll be allowed to photograph whole pages?
My local registry doesn't allow that!
Privacy and GDPR concerns.

Marriages are public events so the names etc are public knowledge; I think that they've escaped the clutches of GDPR, although some record offices may think otherwise.

I asked...

Thank you for your e-mail.

The only access restrictions would be if the register was in too fragile a condition to bring down to the searchroom.  If the register has been microfilmed, you can view it on a microfilm reader. If not, you can order the original document when you arrive.
