Joseph Platt bc1850, Manchester, England
« on: Monday 15 January 24 18:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Revisiting the 2nd great grandfather of my husband.

Emma Platt b1855 married Robert Fouchard on 28 December 1907 in Hulme, both 22 years old.  Father's name given as Joseph Platt, labourer.  We know these facts are true.

For the last 15 years, we've assumed a certain Joseph Platt but are now questioning.

Without trying to draw anybody in with what might be false information, can anyone take a fresh look please to find the right Joseph?

Thanks.

Can you look at the birthyears you have given?

If Joseph was b around 1850 - his daughter Emma could not have been b 1855 nor could she be 22 in 1907

What is Emma's birthplace on the 1911 census?

Have you found her on earlier censuses - please give details

Sorry, I meant 1885.

Her birthplace in the 1911 is Manchester, not Hulme.

Have you found her on the 1891 or 1901 census?  I notice another Emma Platt also married in 1907

1881 there is a Joseph & Margaret Ann Platt.  Joseph is a corn mill labourer.  Is this the one you are following as Margaret is a widow in 1891 with a 5yr old daughter Emma b Manchester

The 2 children in 1881 were b Liverpool - mmn Vernon & in 1891 there is a male Vernon boarding with them

No Emma Platt birth with mmn Vernon

We believe the 1901 when they were living at Cowslip Court and in 1891 are correct.

Sorry, head spinning ... I'll be back in an hour or so if you can bear with me ...?

Thanks.

So, we believe Joseph Platt died in 1890 in Cowslip Court, Hulme. In the '91 census, Margaret Platt, widow c1836 Chester with Margaret Ann 1874 Liverpool, Elizabeth 1877 Hulme, Emma 1886 Hulme.  Also John William Vernon 1871 Blackley.

In the 1901, Margaret Ann Platt 1842 Stapleford, laundress, Cowslip Court, Margaret Ann Burton 1873 , Liverpool, Emma 1885 Manchester, soap packer (?), Alfred Burton, son in law, 1876 Manchester and two grandchildren named Burton.

just posting this as you posted

Everything seems to be consistent with the Joseph Platt, age 31, [dob 1850] named on the 1881 census as being the father of Emma Platt.
By 1891 the mother Margaret/Margaret Ann is a widow and back in Hulme.
When Margaret Ann Platt, Emma's older sister marries (Burton)  in 1898 she has her father as Joseph Platt deceased
There is a Joseph Platt death Q2 Chorlton 1890/age 41 [dob 1849]
In 1901 Margaret Ann, daughter, married is in same house as Emma in Cowslip Court.
In 1907 Emma marries and her father is stated to be Joseph Platt, although it doesn't state that he is deceased (but my understanding is that this wasn't a legal requirement).

Thanks Alan, that's what we've had.  It all sits fairly well together but we can't find Joseph.

There's a Joseph Platt b1850 in Manchester working as a servant in a drapers shop ...?  Seems unlikely so who is he?
