I would imagine a lot of people would expect a space before a surname to be treated as non-significant.

I would imagine a lot of people would expect a space before a surname to be treated as non-significant.

I worked in IT for more than 45 years.
I never worked on a system that treated leading spaces as non-significant! ;)

In text fields, a space is a character.

<sp> is the usual abbreviation for a space.
So "<sp>Abc" is not the same as "Abc" or "<sp><sp>Abc".
