George PATIENCE
« on: Tuesday 16 January 24 12:38 GMT (UK) »
I’m researching GEORGE PATIENCE (1873–1963) who was born on 21 June 1873 at Morangie Road, Tain, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.

His Birth Registration records that he was illegitimate. His mother was Christina Patience, a Domestic Servant, born abt. 1845 in Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland. (Her father John was the ferryman at Meikle Ferry.)

In 1861 Christina was with her mother Margaret at Well Street, Tain, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland and in 1873 she gave birth to George at Morangie Road, Tain.

In 1871 her mother Margaret Patience was at Morangie Road, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland (with her son John Patience).

I’ve been unable to find census records for George or Christina Patience for 1871 and 1881. Can you help please?

There are other births for George Patience around the same time.

However, re Carole’s and emeltom’s post, there is a marriage in Gloucestershire in 1938
George Patience, 64 yrs widower , Gardener  -father Duncan Fraser Patience, deceased, Painter
Constance Mary Teresa Gale, 21 yrs of Dursley, Gloucestershire

Did George move to England?

Those details plus birthdate in opening post match an entry on the 1939 register.  Details are not allowed - you need to view it yourself

2 children were born to the marriage in 1939 & 1942 - details can be found on www.freebmd.org.uk as they may still be alive

Thank you all for this information.  When George married in Scotland in 1898, no father was listed. He did move to England and when he married again in Glos. in 1938 his father was shown as Duncan Fraser Patience, deceased, Painter.

I wondered if Christina had married a Duncan Fraser but I couldn't find a marriage record (on Ancestry). The 1876 record you've found solves the puzzle.

I do have the '39 Register and the Probate notice thanks.

My friend Mavis (Patience) visited Tain several years ago and searched for the burial site or info about her grandparents Duncan Fraser Patience and Christina. She asked me if I could find any details and now I have lots to tell her, so thank you again. Jeff
