What is 4,00 Rand?
« on: Wednesday 17 January 24 00:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have just received a quote from the Western Cape Archives and Record Service:

"Copies of the relevant document will be supplied on receipt of payment to the value of R4,00 (R1-
00 per image)"

I am trying to convert this to (Australian Dollars) AUD and it seems like it is only $0.32 AUD today.

I am confused by the comma 4, 00 and not familiar with the currency.

I tried this converter and got $32.03

I would expect you will have an extra charge for a foreign exchange though.

Yes, thanks, that is what I thought.  I was just confused that it was written as 4,00 not 4.00.

No, you were correct in the first place.   In South Africa the comma is used where we would use a decimal point, so 4,00 is 4 rand and 0 cents.

Thanks, Jomot, so we are still taking 32 cents AUD?

I am not expecting a big document.  Looks like it is 4 pages then.

Yes - it hardly seems worth charging for it, does it?

Value for AUD.

At that price, if the document is disappointing in information I will have that consolation.

I just hope the bank doesn't think that I am being scammed as it is such a strange amount.

Bank will not accept such a small transfer.

Most of Europe uses a comma as a decimal point.
Or it did when I lived in The Netherlands for 16 years!

There is a setting in Excel that allows you to use a comma as a decimal separator, and also to use a period as a thousands separator. So, a value of three thousand is written 3.000,00.
