Marriage in Dunscore, Dumfries-shire 1873
« on: Thursday 18 January 24 15:28 GMT (UK) »
My 2x great-uncle James Jardine married Anne Johnstone in Dunscore, Dumfries-shire in 1873, however I cannot decipher the name of the cottage in Dunscore. I'm also unsure as to the exact date of the marriage - I hover between the thirteenth & the fifteenth.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Many thanks.

James

I think the address might be Cranston Cottage, but other opinions and local knowledge might be useful. From a comparison with other letters, I'm certain it begins with 'C'.

And the date is Thirteenth. Note (a) the crossing of the upper case 'F' has a clear vertical line at its right hand end (see 'Forms' and 'Free'), which is sometimes the only thing to distinguish it from 'T'; (b) the loop below the letter after 'i' is part of the 'J' in June below.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks for that so far. I've used the date to update my records but I can't find Cranston Cottage on any searches. I have to admit though it does look like you could be right.
I'll keep searching here too and try to confirm or otherwise.
Thanks again!

May be Crawston Cottage which lies to the East of Drumscore. Seen on the extreme right on this National Library of Scotland (nls) OS Six Inch, 1888-1913 Map.

P.S. Cottage is still there. Use cursor to slide Blue Dot on bottom left of map for an up-to-date satellite view.

I believe you’ve cracked it - I also found another old map of Dunscore after looking at yours and Crawston Cottage is there, clear as day.

Can’t thank you enough for that and now I can complete another record!

Thanks again to both.
