Can you post all that you know about Joseph?
We need some more information in order to help sort things out.

Helen, Who did your Joseph Blundell marry? Where? When?
Do you have him in the census?

According to his Wikipedia page Bryan Blundell (c. 1675 – 1756),  – merchant, slave trader, Mayor of Liverpool and co-founder of the Liverpool Bluecoat School – had three sons, Richard, Jonathan and Henry.

According to a genealogy published by George Blundell Longstaff in 1903 in The Northern Genealogist:

1) the will of this Bryan Blundell (d 1756) mentions sons William (d 1766), Bryan, Richard and Jonathan.

2) Bryan (son of Bryan) married Ann Maria Pole. He died in Liverpool in 1790 aged 69.

3) Bryan Blundell and Ann Maria Pole have six children listed in the article, one of whom is William b. 1764

Quote
Mentioned in his father's will. Executor of his mother's will. He died in Liverpool in 1842. He married in 1803 Sarah Dickson, and by her, who died in 1842, had issue...

Their children Include a William Dickson Blundell.

No other William Blundells are mentioned.
Boyd, Dove, Blakey, Burdon

What is your last known verifiable facts for your family.

The Joseph son of William and Rachel mentioned died age 3. So you have gone astray somewhere.
