Daniel PLANT, born 1842, Hargrave, Cheshire

Daniel PLANT was born in May 1842 in Hargrave, Cheshire, the son of John PLANT and his wife Hannah (nee OAKLEY).

I raised the following post a little while ago but, sadly, no response, and I thought starting this new topic under Cheshire may provide the answer:

I have a fairly comprehensive biography for him up to 09/06/1861 when he was discharged from Parkhurst Prison after a short 18 month sentence for throwing stones at a railway carriage.   There then follows a 20 year interval up to 1881 from which time onwards he is again fully documented.

It is that 20 year interval that confounds me.  He appears to have joined the 70th Regiment of Foot and deserted at least 4 times: 14/02/1864 Colchester, Essex, 11/03/1865 and 28/12/1865, both in Otahuhu, New Zealand, and 27/06/1870 Limerick, Ireland.  I have searched those appropriate available Indexes for details about his military career (enlistment etc.) without success.   Can anyone help please?

He is transcribed as ‘Daniel’ at FindMyPast and at thegenealogist.co.uk,  but as Saml. at Ancestry. The name is indeed very unclear but comparison with the head of household Silverstone suggests to me that the first letter is not S.

Excellent research.   How did you find that 1871 Census reference?   The christian name is open to a million interpretations!!!!   However, Barrow-in-Furness seems very appropriate as in 1872 he married Frances Constance McVITTIE in Whitehaven (just around the corner!!!) which I have since determined with the help of your post.

His military career remains uncharted sadly.
