59 Rusholme road cholton on medlock
« on: Saturday 20 January 24 11:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello again.
This is going to sound strange.
I'm trying to find out who a caretaker of a cemetery lived and where the cemetery was.
The caretaker was called Thomas crossfield. I'm not sure if this address is anything to do with the cemetery.
I have an address 59 Rusholme road cholton on medlock. I can't seem to find out what the cemetery was called.

My mum told me that she visited her gran

And that one day my dad told her that he used to pass a cemetery dragging a stick across the gates tormenting a dog.
My mum said she told my dad it was her dog.
I shown my mum a photo of the cemetery.
She said it was that one  I can't seem to load the picture up.

If anyone please help me with the cemetery. I would really appreciate it.
Kind regards
Mrs Dorothy lucas
On my grandads marriage certificate it has the same address.
From what I can understand my great gran Frances worked for Mr crossfield.

Hello Dorothy
There is no Rusholme road in Chorlton on Medlock, or even in Manchester come to that. There's a Rusholme grove and a Rusholme place both in Rusholme. (Manchester A to Z)
There's records of a Thomas Crossfield buriedin 3 different cemeteries:- Philips park cemetery, Miles Platting. Manchester general cemetery, Harpurhey and Southern cemetery, Chorlton-cum-Hardy (Findagrave)
If your great grandmother worked for Mr Crossfield it must have been a long time ago, any idea When?

Cornwall: Bailey, Bilkey, Collins, Goldsworthy, Holman, Ivey, Martin, Michell, White.
Lancashire: Clough, Hargreaves,Hilton.

Rusholme is the suburb immediately south of Chorlton on Medlock.  I can imagine someone saying "Rusholme Road" meaning the main road to or through Rusholme.  It is actually named Oxford Road in Chorlton on Medlock, becoming Wilmslow Road through Rusholme.  But those cemeteries are not nearby.

Rusholme Place is quite short, 15 houses on one side only in 1933, then the name changes to Oxford Place.  Rusholme Grove is long enough to have a no. 59, but located on the S. side of Rusholme, some distance from Chorlton on Medlock.

But..now known as Gartside Gardens

Hopefully this takes you to an old map with the cemetery and Rusholme road

My great gran Frances worked for Mr crossfield before my grandad was 15
My grandad was born 1914  there was something my mum told me about my great gran. Apparently while she was working for Mr crossfield she lived in the house. As a lodger but did domestic work.
Apparently one day my great gran asked Mr crossfield if she could have her son living with her. Mr crossfield asked how old was he. My great gran replied he's 15 years old. Then Mr crossfield said yes she can have him with her.

So I assume the address on my grandads marriage certificate of 59 Rusholme road chorlton on medlock. Is where both my great gran Frances and my grandad lived.
Mr crossfields name is on the certificate of my grandads marriage to my grandma eveline in 1933

So it was on the north side of Chorlton on Medlock.  A lot of this property was demolished c1965-75 and replaced with university buildings and new housing.  It seems the name and the curving line of Rusholme Road have been obliterated.

See SW corner of this 1:2500 map revised 1932.  https://maps.nls.uk/view/126522845

OS 1888 1:500 Town Plan,: https://maps.nls.uk/view/231274461

It needs a directory, or the OS 1:2500 editions from the 1950s to locate the number, but they are not on NLS Maps yet.  Enquiry to Manchester local studies library?

Re the 1888 Town Plan, the 1891 Census reads -

57 Rusholme Road
59 ditto Cemetry (sic) Lodge
61 ditto Rooms over stables
65 Congregational Chapel
7 Chapel Place

A "Lodge" is marked on the map
