Looking for help in figuring out a name
« on: Saturday 20 January 24 18:03 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage  for John  Sullivan  &  Mary Dempsey  Aug. 6, 1865

I can't figure out the last name for the witness  Margaret.

I hope that someone will be able   to figure it out.

Thanks  Sharon

I thought that too but looking at the way the G is on other ones it doesn't look the same.

I'd say Griffin. The entries on that page were written and signed by lots of different people, and there's only one other one by the same person as this one (J.W. Donahoe). That other entry doesn't have an upper case 'G', and neither has a clear upper case 'P', but in both of them he does a lower case 'g' in a very similar style to this, only smaller.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

There is no tittle over the third letter, or the next, which makes me think the letter is not an ‘i’ so I’m not persuaded the surname is Griffin.

Could any other records help?

I've looked at it for a good while and I agree with Arthur and Kay  - Griffin.

Another vote for Griffin. I agree with Kay, Arthur and Gadget, and for the reasons given by Arthur.
