Locus & Cause of Death Hurlford, Ayrshire
« on: Sunday 21 January 24 11:35 GMT (UK) »
Despite the writing being fairly clear I still can't make out the exact locus and the cause of death.

The cause of death is legible apart from one word which I just can't find despite searches.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

James

I think the address might possibly be 11 A Block, Hurlford.

Apparently the 'Blocks' near Hurlford were built by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company in 1908. https://www.facebook.com/475344285963552/posts/franks-friday-photobarleith-blocksthe-barleith-blocks-were-built-at-barleith-nea/1213775768787063/

Many thanks for that. I couldn't get my head round a 'd' in that word and that through me off. I'd never have seen 'penetrating' so thanks!
I can't find any address in Hurlford which matches - sounds like an institution address to me which doesn't help me.

"Rodent ulcer penetrating to brain" -- good grief!

I was a GP specialising in skin problems. Nowadays, rodent ulcers are known as basal cell carcinomas (BCC). They are a type of skin cancer, but generally held to be relatively benign as these things go, as they tend to grow very slowly and not spread to other parts of the body such as lymph nodes, liver, bone etc the way something like a malignant melanoma can.

But I was taught, and always advised patients, that it was usually best to have them removed because although slow-growing, they would continue to grow and could affect other organs around the site. Since the commonest place for a BCC is on the head/face, that often meant that they could start to affect the eyelid, for example.

However I've never seen one that had been left so long that it had had the chance to grow as much as this poor man's. Every day is a school day, hey!

According to the information at this link the official name of the Blocks was the Railway Buildings:

And this link should take you to an OS map from 1910 showing where they were:

On modern maps the site seems to be occupied by Malcolm Logistics, Mauchline Road, Hurlford.

Many thanks to all - the 'A Block' now makes sense as the husband was a Railway Surfaceman & a Railway Plate Layer.
Thanks too for the map & image. Always seem to add a bit when you have a visual.
I have to say that I was a wee bit shocked when I saw the cause of death - getting used to all sorts of medical conditions whilst doing this ancestry stuff but that was a shocker!

Thanks again to all!

....

I was one who had a basal cell carcinoma removed from most of my lower right eyelid. It had grown there.  After the removal I had plastic surgery using a technique devised by two NZers Gillies and MacIndoe https://nzhistory.govt.nz/people/sir-archibald-mcindoe as surgeons during WW1 & 2.  This was to grow new skin in situ by using a modification of the technique they devised https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking-stalk_skin_flap

My surgeon drew the skin to grow the new lower lid down from skin at the back of the top eyelid (where there is spare skin apparently).
