Fletchers of North/South Leverton Nottinghamshire
« on: Sunday 21 January 24 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to do my paternal family free but having issues on finding anything about a William Fletcher. I think my tree is as follows:

Myself
Steven Fletcher (Doncaster) 1952-2016
Gordon Samuel Fletcher (Doncaster) 1929 - 2022
Clarence Fletcher (North Leverton) 1901-1970
Samuel Fletcher (Harby) 1872 - 1939
Samuel Fletcher (North Leverton) 1824 - 1905
William Fletcher (South Leverton) 1794 - ????

I can't find anything about a William Fletcher all I can find out is that there was a William Fletcher, baptised in South Leverton in 1794. He might have been a bastard as only the name Eliz is given, so I don't know if Fletcher is his surname or his mothers as no surname given. I have tried searching for a date of death but can't find one.

For Eliz, all I can find out is that she might have been born in Retford, in 1780 but that would make her only 14. Her parents are maybe a William and Sarah Fletcher. That's all I can find out.

Would be grateful for any help on locating a William/Elizabeth.

Many thanks

Baptism:
1871 11 05   Samuel   son of Samuel   FLETCHER    and Jane      Farmer   Harby   (you've got 1872)

Marriage: 1870 06 20   Samuel   FLETCHER   Jane   SPOWAGE   ELSTON All Saints
(a daughter was bapt at Elston in 1877)

Baptism in South Leverton (not North)
1824 07 18   Samuel   son of William   FLETCHER   and Elizabeth      Labourer   South Leverton

There was an Elizabeth Fletcher living in South Leverton in the 1841 census, her age was given as 55, she was a nurse, and living with an elderly farming couple, William and sarah Bradley. Could this be Samuel's mother? I think she may have been widowed by then as there's no William with her. Elizabeth's burial is probably this one:
1843 10 15   Elizabeth   FLETCHER    age 53   SOUTH LEVERTON All Saints  (so b around 1790)

But there's no burials in South Leverton of any William Fletcher of a similar yob to Elizabeth. There is this one in South Leverton but if this was your William, it would make a big age difference between him and Elizabeth:
1827 03 18   William   FLETCHER    age 63   SOUTH LEVERTON All Saints (so b around 1764)

Without a rough yob for William, it's very difficult to narrow the search down.

(All info above from Notts FHS sources)

Ah - I've just seen other South Leverton baptisms for William and elizabeth:

1815 08 20      William
1819 04 18      Sarah
1821 09 16      John
1824 07 18      Samuel     (your ancestor)
1830 11 11      Charles      FLETCHER   Elizabeth      Widow

So that implies that William and Elizabeth married before 1815, and obviously that William died between 1824 - 1830. So maybe that 1827 burial is the right one?

These are the marriages of a William Fletcher and Elizabeth in the years immediately before that baptism:

1813 06 14   William   FLETCHER   Elizabeth   GUNTHORPE   BOUGHTON St Matthew
1814 06 14   William   FLETCHER   Elizabeth   TAYLOR   NEWARK St Mary Magdalene
1814 07 10   William   FLETCHER   Elizabeth   TOWLE   BEESTON St John the Baptist
1815 03 07   William   FLETCHER   Elizabeth   FENTON   STURTON LE STEEPLE St Peter and St Paul

I think we can rule out the Newark and Beeston couples as children were subsequently bapt to couples of those names in those places. Sturton le Steeple is only a couple of miles from S Leverton; Boughton is about 14 miles away. So the frontrunner in my mind would be the Sturton le Steeple marriage, 5 months before the first baptism in S Leverton.

There are no details other than those already shown on the Notts FHS sources but it might be useful to see if the marriage documentation gives any further info, eg which parish the two of them were from, was William a widower (if he was indeed a lot older), witnesses etc.

Hello All,

Many thanks for all the replies. I should probably have covered the wives from what I know. I assumed that most of the Fletchers were associated with the villages of North and South Leverton as well as Sturton le Steeple. I have assumed that they were mostly labourers and therefore did not travel to far. I also assumed originally that the men had married in thier 20's, this was true however it apepars they were often widowers and married again and had children in thier 40's.

Myself Ben Fletcher 1980 -
Steven Fletcher (Doncaster) 1956-2016
1st Wife Patricia O'Halloran (Doncaster) 1952-1999
2nd Wife Ann Bennett (Staffordshire) 1956-

Gordon Samuel Fletcher (Doncaster) 1929-2022
Wife Noreen Jackson (Doncaster) 1928-2019

Clarence Fletcher (North Leverton) 1901-1970 -
Wife Sarah Ann Whitehead (Window) born Cleary (Dublin, Ireland) 1899-1990

Samuel Fletcher (Harby) 1872-1939
Possible 1st wife Annie Saunders 1873-1898
2nd Wife Hannah Hartley (Abbottsthorpe?) 1872-1941

Samuel Fletcher (North Leverton) 1824-1905
1st wife Mary Taylor?
2nd wife Jane Spowage (Elston) 1833-1904

William Fletcher (South Leverton) 1794 -????
Married Elizabeth Fenton (North Leverton) 1789-1823?

I understand William was baptised in South Leverton and only the mother is named as Eliz. No name of the father. Would this be possible to trace?

I have searched for an Elizabeth Fletcher, who I assumed would have been born around 1770's, however all I can find is a Elizabeth Fletcher, born in 1780 in East Retford, Daughter of a William and Sarah Fletcher. However this would make her 14, which does not sound right.
