I have been chasing the history of a John West waiter of Southwark born about 1800 for over 30 years but can find very little on him. Nothing on who his family was. How do I see if somebody has mentioned him in the past entries of this site?
West, Alexander, Banham, Balchin.

Unfortunately the surname "West" is a topical one when surnames were introduced the  surname was chosen due to living "west" of a settlement" and unless your ancestor never moved it could be difficult finding earlier ancestors.

Have you already checked the "surname List" on this website and compared notes with others researching the same surname in the same county?

The surname interest tables are not really suitable for this type of search.

I  used "John West" in the London and Middlesex boards in the Search that Kevin referred to

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=search

Narrowing it down like this gave me a page of results.

I often find it easier to search via Google (other search engines are available).

Type in "John West" Southwark

then try adding waiter too.

It may be that there isn't much to find.  It's a common name.  You may be able to find his birth, marriage & death.  The rich, the poor & the bad feature in more records.  Wills & Newspapers can be a useful sources.

Have you looked up the birth of Ernest to find mothers maiden name to look for their marriage?
Marriage witnesses can be helpful but you may have already done this.
