Harold Edwin elphick
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 10:16 GMT (UK) »
Morning everyone.
I'm having a mare in finding a copy of a will for harold Edwin elphick.
He was born 14 June 1894 Westham Sussex to William elphick and Emma Russell.
September quarter 1894
Eastbourne
2b
60
He died 6 dec 1983 aged 89.
Dec q
Eastbourne
East Sussex
18
0485
His probate was the 17 Feb 1984.
I've tried to access his will on the government site as usual and nothing.
I've tried to buy a digital copy of his death certificate but they don't have years between 1957-1984 .
He didn't marry or have children.
He was in ww1 and his medals have somehow ended up being sold in Australia.  I know a lot of elphicks went to Australia and wondered if a relative of his did also. He had quite a few siblings and when his father died in 1943 they are all there . Well the  living ones were lol.
The person that sold the medals had the surname Bennett.
The surname elphick is in my ancestry and know a reasonable amount about them but this one is proving to be a bit of an enigma.
Any help would be so appreciated.
Thank you all.

Perhaps he didn't leave a will?

I've just read on line you need a will for probate or it goes to letters of administration

The information is coming up for me on the Gov.UK website with no problem.
When you click on the results page scroll down and you will see a very small unreadable image, click on that and it will bring up a readable image. He is the top on the right.

I wanted any information as to who he might of left his medals to.
They came up for sale recently In Australia and it was an eagle eyed elphick ,who lives over there ,and he secured their sale. Keeps them in the elphick " family" which we all thought it was a nice thing for him to do. They certainly weren't cheap.
I was hoping to look at a will of Harold's and see if he left them to any relatives in Australia .
It just would of been nice to see how they got there and put that information to the medals.
Sounds daft and I know it maybe to some but it's rather sad they were sold at all .

All I could find re his estate was a line in the London Gazette put in by a solicitor, asking for anyone with claims against the estate to contact him.
If someone dies intestate, then someone, usually next of kin, would apply for letters of administration, before they could dispose of any property. That could be a sibling or a niece or nephew, it would probably be difficult to find out.
Some years ago, my OH found that a family bible that once belonged to his 3 or 4 x g-g-parents was up for auction, but we were too late to buy it. The auction house was able to send us a very good quality image of the page with names and dobs and told us it had been bought by someone with the same surname. More recently my OH did a DNA test with Ancestry and so had several paternal cousins which he messaged. he discovered one of his third cousins had bought the bible, so it stayed in the family. We never discovered who sold it. So many of these things just get lost for many years. In the case of someone who died in 1983, I wouldn't be surprised if the administrator just got a house clearance company in, then they would just sell anything with any value on through their usual outlets.
