St.Andrew’s was to be The Cathedral should The Cathedral be bombed in WW2
A very big church.
There is a concrete raft over the graveyard .
Its stained glass window was moved to Lancaster Castle for safety given the
close proximity to what was London Rd. Station - now Piccadilly.
The site of the church was sold for development but not the graveyard.

Viktoria.

I have downloaded the image and messed about with contrast and exposure, but to no avail. The image is quite dark and very low contrast so there’s nothing much to be done. It’s also a very low resolution image, so AI-sharpening is more likely to create artefacts than to provide real enhancement.

Online information about the monument states that the inscription is illegible, again suggesting that there isn’t much that can be done. I suppose – and I am not an expert – that photographing it with good light at a shallow angle might help to bring out the inscription.

I’m baffled by the ongoing correspondence on this one as Japeflakes posted a link two days ago which gives details of the inscription which seemed to me to answer the original question. Please correct me if I’ve the wrong end of the stick!

Oh yes, you are correct! I followed the link, saw ‘Inscriptions legible? – no’ and assumed that meant no-one knew what it said…but the inscription is given immediately above that statement.

So, to make amends and save others the trouble of following the link, here is the inscription:

Quote
TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PERPETUAL MEMORY/ OF THE CHURCHMAN OF THIS/ PARISH & CONGREGATION/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ THIS CROSS AND THE TABLET IN THE CHURCH ARE ERECTED BY/ THEIR FELLOW CHURCHMEN

(I assume that 'CHURCHMAN' should be 'CHURCHMEN'.)
