There is an image of Royal Artillery Tracer Card 787661 McDonnell James (Robert on card ). Enlistment date 3 Jul 1933 Discharged 15 Jan 1955 available  from Forces War Records.    Working on how to reduce image size for attachment.

Thats his service number. If I send you a PM with my email address could you please send it.
Thanks,
Paul
I lived in Ardwick, Manchester in the early 1960s as a small child and much travelling of the world has now led me to want to know more about my roots. Carter, Beckwith, Connolly, Heron and Kelly are all names that form part of my family tree.

Thanks for this.

I have seen his name as both Ronald James and Robert James but the service number is correct. The Manchester address in 1946 was a clue to his area of birth but nothing concrete however, his attestation also in Manchester in 1933 added weight to this and now the other evidence.

His mother maiden name is Kenyon but I cannot find a marriage to McDonnell.

The 1921 Census is a bit mixed up showing a 68 year old widow Margaret Chandler, her daughter Margaret McDonnell (b 1891) and then three more of her children (originally shown as grandchildren then sons and daughters), Robert (9), John (5) and Annie (2). They must be Margarets children.
