Vodafone 3G switch off
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 09:40 GMT (UK) »
Vodafone have been sending me emails telling me that the 3G network is about to be switched off in favour of 4G. They I already have everything I need for a 4G connection, I just need to update some settings on my phone. This is where I encounter the problem, when I click to go to the update I choose which make of phone  (Samsung) and it comes up with a whole list of them, complete with pictures, but my phone isn't there. It's not as if it's an ancient model, I bought it late 2019 although these days that might be considered ancient.
There's no indication of exactly what settings I need to change.

I'm no technophobe but this is driving me mad. Can anyone help please?

Well, sort of......

It took me to the right place but the options it gives me are:

LGE/3G/2G (auto connect) - This is the one already selected
3G/2G (auto connect)
3G only
2G only

No sign of 4G!

But thanks Gadget

Thanks Gadget, I've had a go but unfortunately the settings shown on the video don't appear on my phone.
I did Google it though, with my model of phone (A40), found a couple of videos that didn't help but found one for a Virgin network that shows the same settings as mine and indicates that the option I already have selected is the right one to enable 4G.

I guess I'll have to wait and see if it's successful, either that or take the phone into the Vodafone shop in town and ask them. I also have a spare phone that I keep in the car, now that is ancient! It runs on 2G, I believe that will still be available even though they're switching off 3G. But heaven knows what will actually happen!

I think you meant to type "LTE/3G/2G".

LTE is one form of 4G. It stands for "Long Term Evolution". There are various other flavours, but all brands of network should support LTE.

If a connection can't be made to LTE, the phone will try 3G, and then 2G.

Surprisingly, 2G will still be around when 3G is killed off. There are some essential services which rely on it.

Aah, all becomes clear now! Thank you Andrew, it is LTE, although I must admit the description doesn't really make itself clear  - perhaps it's going to continue for ever?  ;D Hardly likely I'd say, there now seems to be what my dad used to call built in obsolescence.

So does LTE mean that my phone will connect to 4G? And if not it will use 2G as 3G is being disconnected? Hope I'm understanding this correctly.

And presumably my ancient emergency phone will still be usable as it only connects to 2G anyway?

I'm going to go into old fogey mode now and say I wish they'd leave things alone,. Although I suppose when there's ever increasing pressure on the networks they have to give us the 'new and improved ' version.  Time will tell whether  it's actually improved ....

Yes, you've got it.

The phone will try LTE first (which your provider WILL support) and if you are out of range, will try 3G, and that having been switched off, 2G after that.
