4th battalion 60th rifles family member tracing
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 12:21 GMT (UK) »
Anyone have any information about a member of the 4th battalion 60th royal rifles.

Richard Hall born circa 1828 West Meath in Ireland. Think he was a bandmaster and was stationed at the Curragh at some point. Looking at his children both were born possibly in Canada (Mary Hall born circa 1863 and Isabella Caroline Hall born circa 1872) which might tie in with information about where they might have been based in Nova Scotia in the 1860s.

Thanks in advance.

There's a baptism in Quebec on 14 September 1862, of Mary Martha, daughter of Color Sergeant Richard Hall and his wife Isabella Caroline, nee Wade. She was born 3 August 1862, he was in 4th Battalion, 60th Rifle Regiment.

There's a tree on Ancestry that has his army record in the gallery:

You'll see from the military record that he served 6 years in South Africa (with 2nd battalion of 60th), 1 year in India, and 9 years in Canada. He had medals for South Africa 1851-53, and the Indian Mutiny(1858). He transferred to 4th battalion from 1 May1861. Transferred to army staff in Canada on 12 November 1865 where he served as a clerk.  Discharged in October 1870 intending to reside in Rathdowney.

If daughter Isabella was born in Canada in 1872, that's a bit of a mystery as the family should have been back in Ireland by then. Perhaps she was born a couple of years earlier.

Note the tree on Ancestry lists several other children.

Per the marriage record, John Frost was a Sergeant in 5th Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment (18th Foot). That battalion was in Kilkenny at the time (August 1886).
