John Hardy of Worksop
« on: Monday 29 January 24 10:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am linked to a genetic cousin through a John Hardy of Worksop who moved to Australia with his family around 1883. I'm hoping by tracing his ancestors, it will open up a brick wall in my own tree. I'm hoping those reading this are better at tracing them than me!
John was born in Worksop around 1849 to William and Elizabeth Hardy (nee Dring). His Australian papers state his Father as John but I don't believe that is correct. He married Sarah Jane Towell 31 Dec 1870 in Hull where he was employed as a fisherman. It's John's parents and their ancestors that I'm interested in. I found the family in the 1850 and 1860 census records (Elizabeth deceased in 1861 but no apparent death records).
1851
Household schedule number   44
Piece   2122
Folio   72
Page number   10

1861
Household schedule number   44
Piece   2122
Folio   72
Page number   10

I've found a potential for 1841 but I'm not 100%. I also can't find anything on Elizabeth Dring born c1809 in Swanwick Derbyshire. William Hardy, born c1894 Heanor is possibly my 4th G Grandfather and I'm working on the theory that he left his first family or lived a double life!

Thank you.

Russ

Presumably you have not linked him back to John Hardy via a paper trail then or have you his date of birth wrong and it should be c1794

Sorry, you're correct, should read 1794!

I know I'm descended from a William Hardy born around 1794 (likely Heanor area). He was variously described as FWK and or Gardener but I've never located him in a census. Certainly not listed with his wife and children.

I'm wondering if the William Hardy who fathered John Hardy (1849) is the same person.

Thanks Rosie.
I purchased Arthur's birth certificate and confirmed his mother was formerly Elizabeth Dring. Sadly I cannot find any record of marriage between William Hardy and Elizabeth Dring. I wondered if either William or Elizabeth had been married before and if Sarah was the daughter of only one of them. No deaths recorded in Worksop for either Arthur or Elizabeth. I have William's death certificate. He died in worksop workhouse 16th April 1865 (Mary Hayes present who was the local publican's daughter).

I have been looking for possible earlier marriages for Elizabeth in case she married William Hardy in another name.  I did wonder about the large gap between Sarah and the boys.
I could not see Elizabeth or Arthur in 1861 or their deaths prior to that.

I will look again now I have better access on my desktop  :)

So John did not go to Australia until after 1881 census - address Dauntless, Hull in 1871/81.

I wonder what happened to Sarah.

I have John on Vessels (Beautiful Star) in 1871 and 4 Bay Terrace Hull with rest of family in 1881. Sarah also went with him to Australia and died 1928.
