Given that he appears to have been in poverty in 1902, I'm wondering if this is him in 1911, with the wrong birth information supplied for some reason?

1911
Rowton House, Churchyard Row, Newington Butts S E
Registration District Number   23
Sub-registration district   Newington South
ED, institution, or vessel   38-40
Piece   1856

There is a Walter Nelson in there, born about 1873, occupation, Hawker.

His birth location is given as Manchester, but I do wonder if that's a mistake or he was joking, or maybe wished to conceal his identity a bit?

There is a bit more about the Rowton Houses here. Very interesting.

;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

I had seen that 1911 census entry but had dismissed it due to the place of birth.  I hadn't heard of Rowton Houses (very interesting reading).  Sadly, it's the sort pf place I would expect him to be.  With so many residents it would be easy to make a mistake on an entry.

The WWI enlistment record with no address would make sense if he was homeless.

But who knows?

There is a Walter Nelson of 234 Hackney Road London on WW1 service record - no age or family shown

234 Hackney Road was a licensed premises in the early 1920's - the licence was transferred in 1923  according to newspapers.  (It was a Beerhouse according census )

1880 Lower Chapman Street School record gives Walter Nelson's date of birth as 13 June 1872. Hope that's correct!
Parent Elvina. Residence 138 Pennington Street.
