Thomas Roberts and his wife Ann
« on: Wednesday 31 January 24 09:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have found the 1809 marriage of Thomas Roberts, "widower of this parish", and his wife, Ann Jones, "spinster of this parish" at St Catwg, Cwmcarfan in 1809.

They appear on the 1841 Census, living with their daughter Ann Parsons (nee Roberts) and son-in-law, James Parsons at Mount Pleasant, Lower Llanover, Monmouthshire. The record says they were both born in 1776, but this has presumably been rounded down.

So, I am having trouble working out when and where they might have been born.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gordon

On FreeReg, it says he was a Widower and she was a Spinster.

ADDED:
St Clement Parish Register Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire
Marriage 21 Aug 1809 . Banns
Thomas Roberts . Cwmcarvan . Widower
Ann Jones . Cwmcarvan . Spinster

I suspect this is his first marriage:
St Clement Parish Register Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire
Marriage 29 May 1793 . License
Thomas Roberts . Cwmcarvan
Jane Cadle . Cwmcarvan

The marriage records posted are on Ancestry, the signature of Thomas on both appears to be similar. When Ann Roberts married James in 1837, Thomas was noted as a Farmer. The only witnesses was a Ewan Roberts.

The only Cadle family in Monmouthshire in 1841 were William b.1779 and John b. 1780 both farmers at Caldicott Upper Division. There is a Thomas Roberts 30 Servant at the same abode.

Thanks for the replies.

Ewan Samuel Roberts was Ann's brother. He emigrated to the USA like Ann, her husbamd and children in the 1840s.

He was baptised in 1810 at Michaelstone-y-Fedw, where a lot of my family lived. They were also farmers.

Ann gave birth in mid-Atlantic to Henry Seaborn Parsons in 1842.

Thanks,

Ewan and Ann were the only children of Thomas and Ann.

US records indicate that Thomas and Ann remained in the UK after the children emigrated.

Thomas Roberts appears to have died between the 1841 and 1851 Censuses. So, that death record looks very possible.

Death in 1850, aged 73, puts birth around 1776 or 1777.

FindMyPast has a baptism at Trelleck Grange in 1777, with parents William and Mary. That seems to be quite close to Cwmcarfan.
