Edward Quinn/Quin born approx 1865 Co. Donegal
« on: Wednesday 31 January 24 20:10 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can help??

Edward Quinn is my gread grandfather who came to Scotland and married a Mary Burns.  It states in the Scottish Census he was born in Co. Donegal and the age from his marriage cert make is approx 1865.  His parents names on the marriage certificate are James Quinn/Quin and Elizabeth Claffet.

Now, the issue with Claffet is I have searched high and low in all Scotland record and cannot find a single thing about her.  I know her name is Claffet because (1) its how its spelt on Edwards marriage cert and (2) he named his 1st daughter Elizabeth Claffet Quinn with the same spelling.

I cannot find a single thing about Edward, James or Elizabeth online anywhere and I have had a couple of people look and they cant find anything either.

If someone could help me and solve this family mystery I would be do grateful  :)

Hello, and welcome !  8)

I found a death on SP for an Elizabeth Claff Quin 1897 Paisley...
All I did was type in forename begins with Claff under death section and nothing else required.

Hope it helps.

I'll keep digging.

Cheers

P.S:  Are you looking for info on Elizabeth Claffet the senior that married James or Elizabeth Claff Quinn the daughter of Edward?  Just curious.  ;D

Clafferty and McClafferty are fairly common names in Donegal. Claffet isn’t known though, judging by the 1901 census.

What was James Quin’s occupation (according to Edward’s marriage certificate)? And were James & Elizabeth alive or dead on that date? (It’ll say “dcd” if dead. Nothing if alive).

Have a look at the following three births which were registered at Stranorlar and see what you think, they are all to a couple called James Quin and Eliza Clifford of Castletorris:

- Anne in 1866:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1866/03542/2304028.pdf

- James in 1868:

- Margaret in 1869:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1869/03373/2236754.pdf

Could 'Clafett' be 'Clifford' and could Edward's birth have been before the start of civil registration of births in 1864 (or unregistered if around the same time)?

If I'm reading google correctly, Castletorris is a placename in the townland of Castletorrison:

Anyway, just to note until it can be ruled in or out.

Well, if this theory is correct, then OP is out of luck, as marraige and birth seem to be before start of civil registration, and Catholic parish registers for the parishes of Raphoe and Stranorlar don't start until 1876/1877.
