Army Service look up.
« on: Friday 02 February 24 20:03 GMT (UK) »
hello i'm looking for my grand dads WWI service record. I don't really know much about him
however he was born Henry Bunce 28/1/1889 in Lambeth. I believe he may possibly have served in the Army Service Corp and maybe had some connection with horses but not necessarily in a Vetinary capacity. He may have been a driver. Any help will be gratefully received.
Thanks

His service record MAY be on Ancestry or FindMyPast,

BUT nearly two-thirds of WW1 service records were destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid.

Hi Cragside,

I've checked both Ancestry and Find My Past for you...and they hold these military records for Henry:

Ancestry
UK, British Army World War I Service Records, 1914-1920
A dozen or so pages.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/324840:1219?tid=&pid=&queryId=dfaa7197-a033-4937-afca-608c4d4907ac&_phsrc=FPN11334&_phstart=successSource

UK, World War l Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920
1 page.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/1496110:5119?tid=&pid=&queryId=6707a7ff-514a-45c8-9450-fde6ed85a0ac&_phsrc=FPN11341&_phstart=successSource

Ancestry's results also show the following - but a Fold3.com sub is needed to access it:

UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records, 1760-1920
These documents seem to relate to his earlier service. I don't have a Fold3 sub so can't tell how many pages there are.

Find My Past
British Army Service Records
Two sets of records, relating to his separate periods of service - appear to be the same as those on Fold3 (6 pages in all on FindMyPast) and some (4 pages) of those on Ancestry.

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or Find My Past, many public libraries provide free access.

There are also one or two threads here on Rootschat about getting a half-price Ancestry subscription - with links directly to the deals on offer. (Annual Worldwide for £89.99 or Annual UK Premium for £59.99.) For example:

Your assumptions are correct.
He was a Driver (horses) in the ASC & was posted to various Divisional Trains
in France.
A Divisional Train was concerned with supplying the Division with
whatever was needed by the men at the Front.
He attested in 1915 so was entitled to the 15 Star along with the BW & V medals.
