Neil McLeod aged 81 in 1851 Forres census
« on: Friday 02 February 24 22:43 GMT (UK) »
Neil McLeod was apparently born in Lochbroom and is a shoemaker.  He was with wife Margaret age 80 born in Ardclach, Nairn.  Similar couple in 1841 census except Neil is 70 and his wife's name is given as Mary.  I am interested in this couple because I have family who used to live in Forres.  I have not figured out Mary or Margaret's maiden name or which Lochbroom family Neil is from.

There is a Neil McLeod in 1861 census in Inverness, Inverness.  Dead in 1861 aged 92.  I tried to figure out who the people with this Neill were Ann MacLeod aged 60 and Helen MacLeod aged 40 but it seems a red-herring.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you seen the original of the 1841 census or just a transcription? It is possible that Margaret's name is abbreviated to Margt and has been misread as Mary.

The FreeCEN transcription for 1841 does give her name as Mary, but says both are born in Morayshire.

No.  I didn't see the original.  I would be happy to know either Margaret or Mary's maiden name.

There might be something here if you do a people search, if his wife lived beyond 1854. There is also the possibility of a gravestone, for which you can also search on the site.

Thanks GR2, I had looked at libindx before but had missed this:

NM071536
MARGARET MCLEOD (MACLEOD) (nee MANN)
c. 1756 to 19 JUL 1852

Date of Birth : c. 1756
Spouse's Name : NEIL MACLEOD SHOEMAKER FORRES
Date of Death : 19 JUL 1852
Place of Death : FORRES

From FamilySearch.org person ID 97CS-9NZ, I was able to find Margaret's father, grandfather, and some grandparents.  I confirmed her father William Mann on Scotland's People and he was married to Christian Ross or Rose with note: I have William Mann born 8 DEC 1728 • Ardclach, Nairnshire, Scotland, resident of Croy married to Christian Rose resident of Nairn, 3rd February 1764.
This information came from the Old Parish Registers Marriages, in the National Records for Scotland found on the Scotland's People website.  research by Jocelyn Gould.
