Private Herb Barber WW1 Australian Army
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 10:18 GMT (UK) »
Very little is known about the above, other than his parents were Andrew Bartley Barber & Margaret nee Cook (Koch). Herb died in England from pneumonia after being gassed earlier on; I think it was just before the war ended. It was from him that the Croix de Guerre medal was passed on shown on a different post here.
There was another Herb Barber was shot and died aged 17 at Bardia (c 1940) while his platoon was landing from the barge.

As ever, Sandra, seems as if you're on the right track, I guess Spanish Flu could have been considered as pneumonia but in France not England?

Hi
The man's WW1 records are digitised here.
https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/

There are letters from his father and his sister about his effects.

There seems to be confusion here as in letter pg 33, his father states he is Next of Kin and  his address to be c/o Mr  W Coulter.

In letter on pr 47, Mrs W. Coulter states she is the soldiers sister and next of kin, and wants his effects.

In a letter on pg 54 his father asks for his Death Certificate. He states he is Next of Kin.  The hand writing ( in my opinion), is  different from his first letter and the language is more "sophisticated"
