NSW: John CASEY, Born 1830, London
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 13:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help expand on the link below, details of the crime, for instance, and any other information that may be helpful.   He was originally transported to VDL aboard the Equestrian in 1847.  Subsequently discharged to freedom in 1862 I then lose sight of him until this 1891 link!!!   His parents incidentally were John and Mary CASEY.

Thank you

I couldn't open your link to Ancestry.co.uk here in Aus so went to the Tasmanian names index instead.

John Casey (ship Equestrian) Ticket of Leave  found guilty 1/1/1859 of assault sentenced to 4 years in ? prison/chains. Other misdemeanours included drunk and absconding from Port Arthur Penal colony.

There is an inquest in November 1891 for John Casey died accidently falling from dray near Latrobe, Tasmania.
I think its unlikely he would be in Armidale NSW, more likely for ex convict men to remain in Tas.. they had neither the money or opportunity to travel, except to the Vic gold rush.

Looking at the Tasmanian Archives, it has John CASEY arriving on the Equestrian (3) on 16 Dec 1852. Aged 22, Apprentice Tailor. "2 1/2 years at Parkhurst" Ticket of leave - 6 July 1858. Parents John and Mary.

Am I looking at the correct John CASEY?

I'm assuming you have these:

Convict record - lots of info up to 1861
https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-111$init=CON33-1-111p47Casey, John
John Casey
Employes: Degraves, Charles: 1854, Cahill, Joseph: 1855
Property:Port Arthur Penal Station
Departure date: 1 Sep 1852
Departure port: Plymouth
Ship: Equestrian (3)
Place of origin:
St Pancras, Middlesex
Voyage number: 357, Police number: 26733, Index number: 11286

Conviction January 1, 1859, Tasmania
https://stors.tas.gov.au/SC32-1-7$init=SC32-1-7_0270
In front of a jury at Oatlands
Thomas Glover (per Earl St Vincent) and
John Casey (per  Equestrian (3))
Guilty of assaulting and robbing James Turner
Sentence: to be kept in FS? (Penal Station?) for 4 years.

Are these the same man - we keep getting the ship Equestrian but voyages 1847 and  1852  ???

I'm not seeing his conviction records in England.
