Baptism Amendment Hard to Read
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 14:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I have found an ancestor's baptism in Latin but there is a crossing out of my great, great grandfather's name with another name written above it. This is a real surprise! There is also a little cross and an amendment below which I am finding hard to read. I think it is also in Latin. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Liz

Do you mean the little note at the bottom of the page?
I think this reads 'A me emendatum' - amended by me - followed by a signature - W.G. Morley?

The replaced name looks to be ‘Ricardi’ - Richard. Does that fit?

Born 7 July and baptised 29 July John Henry Barrett son of Richard Barrett and Mary nee Donovan. God parents William and Julia Barrett

The small mark at the bottom is W G Morley acknowledging that he has made the correctin.

If this took place in Kent then this is the Gro ref

I wonder if the Godfather should have been Richard rather than William and the wrong name was corrected.

It's a bit weird - the father should be William. The mother is correct - Mary Donovan. Got me scratching my head a bit! John Henry's older brother has William as his father and the same for all John Henry's younger siblings. Possibly an error?

I agree - I think the godfather is meant to be Richard and wrong amendment was made. I still have no idea who Richard Barrett and Julia Barrett are. Looks like new possible ancestors!
