The Glamorgan militia was in West Sussex in 1805. But it was Royal, and not north or south.

Have you looked through the rest of the register to see if the abbreviation occurs again, or even if it appears in a different (i.e. more complete) form?

I thought North Gloucester Militia but that is Royal North Gloucester - no idea really.

**
I just searched that and Wikipedia has:
“ In the spring of 1805, with the French Grande Armée assembling at Boulogne, intensive training in light infantry tactics and brigade manoeuvres was carried out. On 30 May the RNGM began a march from Steyning to Bristol …”

The baptism would fit -5th May - but in June , I see ‘N G M’ and later, ‘S G M’.

Wow…that’s really interesting…I will look into that
Thank you Heywood  :-*

I have been hunting them down as travellers. I had no idea of a military connection…so I will definitely look into this.
I started looking at my gt gt gt grandmother in Kent, as she appears to have been from travelling stock and worked my way back to this couple in Sussex

Thank you BushInn 1746. That gives me another angle to look at. I read that the RNGM (Royal North Glouc Reg) was originally the NGM until King George 3 granted them the Royal title in 1795. So you would probably expect to see RNGM, but I will follow both ideas and see what I come up with.
