Doesn't really help - there is a report of a William BARBER, fisherman aged 72 admitted to hosptial in 1886. So born c1816.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/169161059  (3rd column, middle)

William BARBER (34, waterman) married Mary McENTEE (22) 23 Aug 1852 in Hobart. Witnesses were Patrick and Mary RILEY.

Do you have any marriage or death notices for your William BARBER that my mention siblings or other relations?

Modified to add:
I see the witnesses at the marriage of William BARBER and Elizabeth BENNETT were Henrietta DRISCOLL and Herbert SMITH. Not much help.

Thank you for your information so far.

It is possible that William Barber is the father or uncle of William Barber (Subject).

Lovely obituary for your William BARBER, shame it doesn't mention his childhood, parents or siblings

Btw, if you search trove using terms such as "bill barber", limiting to Tasmania, there are a number of nice items mentioning him, many of him singing at functions, and this one about his career:

Thank you for the links. I will do a search for 'bill barber' and see how I go :)

Hi Sue,

Very possible! fits in with the timeline :) Shame it does not mention the mother's name.

Thank you very much :)

I offer these snips only as suggestion of time and place for the parents of your man.
Not excessively helpful.

Mary Barber, the wife of a drayman at the wharf in Hobart may have been in trouble after a row with another woman. The two clearly did not get on  :o 1853.

Possibly still there in 1882 Mrs Barber of the Old Wharf is guardian of a missing boy aged 8. Son of Sarah Bateman. 1882

1917 death of an old man named Barber at the wharf.
