There's a family tree with the same marriage/register/death I have suggested - unless it is yours someone else has come to the same conclusions!

James's son George Henry Jackson married Lily Gray,

Am not seeing that marriage.  The family tree has 2 children for them but no marriage listed.

thanks for all that info

In regards to the George Henry Jackson and Lily Gray marriage, i have yet to find the marriage but they had 6 children, on the records for 5 of them Lily is listed as Jackson but 1 lists her as Lily Gray.

What you found on Catherine / Kates death seems to fit.

I will have to put James's marriage certificate on my long list of documents to be sent for, if only to tell me what his fathers name and job were.

I want to believe James was born in India but with the surname Gray / Grey coming into things i have a nagging feeling that one of his parents may have been Romany.

The birth registrations for the children of George & Lily should have her maiden name.
Which records do you have for them, birth certificates?

I only know the two listed on the family tree but no Gray maiden name for them that I could see.
Maybe Phillips but that may have been a different family.

We don’t know when James came to England which is frustrating.  He could be here in 1891/1881/1871 census with family but not enough info to find him for certain.

Hope your list isn’t very long, I want to find out as well!

I wonder if George might have used the surname Gray when he married (or Jackson Gray?) -   with Lily being Lily Fowell Peet b 1900 Nottingham.    I think the family uses the surnames Jackson Gray in 1921  :-\

Marriages Jun 1918
Gray    George H J    Peet    Nottingham    7b   688
Peet    Lily F    Gray    Nottingham    7b   688

Kay

Added - I noticed a baptism for son George on 29 Aug 1920 at Sneinton with surname listed as Jackson-Gray on the image but the transcription incorrectly lists the mothers surname as Gray

If the above is OK the first four children appear to be registered with mothers maiden name Peet  :-\

GRAY, CLARICE  JACKSON      mmn PEET

That’s very interesting Kay.

George was born as George Henry Jackson Gray as parents were unmarried at the time.

So I think the Gray surname purely comes down from Catherine not from Lily as well would you agree?

Yes - Yesterday I spent ages looking for a birth reg for Clarice (from the 1939 Register)without success to solve the marriage issue and this morning after finding the 1918 marriage it started to make sense

Kay

Added - it doesn't help that some of the transcriptions of the children's baptisms list Lily's maiden name as Gray which doesn't appear on the image

thanks both of you for the info

I got the digital copy of Rebecca Jackson's birth, she was born 17th May 1898 at Portland street, Arnold, Nottingham. Her father is listed as James Edward Jackson and mother as Kate Jackson (formerly Gray).

Definitely making progress.  I wonder if anywhere has the 1897 marriage information to save you getting the certificate......there are some Nottingham marriages online.  Perhaps theirs is somewhere too.
