Help with Record of Service please
« on: Tuesday 06 February 24 13:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
While researching a Records of Service I came across the following...which has me baffled and all and any held will be appreciated.
Under the Examinations column
it lists 'If Passed ....School of Instruction' and then 'Cavalry Pioneer Class' and opposite this
Yes   09  Canterbury & Christchurch are handwritten.

What exactly was a Cavlary Pioneer Class and did this mean he travelled to New Zealand for this course??

There were cavalry barracks at Canterbury in Kent and at Christchurch in Hampshire. No need to go to New Zealand!

Pioneer is a type of employment specialisation within the Army: Wikipedia
That said, I have never heard it being used in connection with the cavalry.

Was this in WW1 when many cavalry units became dismounted.

The following 1st Cavalry Division link has many references to Pioneers and Pioneer Courses etc.
