Understanding causes of death
« on: Tuesday 06 February 24 19:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have a copy of a relatives death certificate from 1882 that has cause of death as "delivery".  This seems like she died in childbirth at the age of 40 but there is no corresponding death certificate for a baby.
Is there any other meaning for delivery or maybe I read it incorrectly?  Is it possible any baby still born would not have the death certified?

 Thank you

Only children born alive are registered.  Even if they only live for a minute or 2 the birth should be registered

There is a separate Still Births Register, which is not online.

(from my time getting a still birth certificate:)
You have to telephone the GRO (was in Southport).
Then provide proof of your connection to the baby.
GRO sends you a form to fill in.
Send that back with payment.

Things may have changed?!

‘Delivery’ seems like an unusual cause of death, even in 1882.
Could it perhaps be ‘Debility’ ?

No use for 1882, the Still Birth Register didn’t begin until 1927.

Delivery is what is written.

Even if the mother dies while giving birth, it doesn't mean the baby dies too. But I guess that you already checked for a birth certificate?

That cert says “Sudden death after delivery. Diseased Heart”
So the delivery itself wasn’t the actual or only cause of death. The stress of it finished off her heart.
