Catherine Campbell married Hugh McEwan
« on: Thursday 08 February 24 22:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi, not sure is anyone can help. The above married in 1828 Middle Church Paisley. There were quite a few years difference in their ages and its possible Hugh was married previously, he had 4 children with Catherine and at least one other child with a Barbara Hayman. I cant find a death certificate for Catherine on Scotlands People someone has recorded 7 Feb 1865 (birth approx 1801) but I have paid for 1865 deaths in this name and also tried under McEwan and McEwen. Im trying to confirm her parents names from the death certificate. Both Hugh, Catherine and children were I believe all born in Argyl, but a few family marriages were in Paisley area the same as theirs so there are potentially family links there. Her daughters second marriage was to a church minister and they eventually settled in Paisley. One son Duncan stayed in Argyl but I cant trace the other sons Peter and Alex after the 1851 Scottish Census. Thanks for any help.

This is probably the death certificate that someone else has recorded. It may not be correct, and they may not have bothered to check it.

Further to the earlier mesage. Unfortunately its the wrong Catherine this one was married to a William McKeown shoemaker. Our Catherine was married to Hugh McEwan 42nd Regiment of Foot but thanks again for responding.

Was Catherine still showing as alive when daughter Flora married firstly in 1856 and then ? (can't easily see her marriage to Rev Alexander Wilson).

Always a possibility that Catherine could have died between 1851-55.

Hello, thank you for replying, her son Duncan Campbell McEwan married for the second time in 1881 and although deceased against his father, it doesnt show deceased against the mother which made me think she was still alive at that time. Flora Anne McEwan married Alexander Anderson in 1856 (Teacher) on Islay and re married Alexander Wilson CMinister) in 1866 in Edinburgh, again mother isnt showing as deceased but father is.

Just curious...

Where was Flora Ann in 1841?

I thought this looked like the family in 1841 from what you have added:

www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a1412f3f4040b9d6ef9858f/duncan-mcewen-1841-argyllshire-bowmore-kilarrow-1829-?locale=en

And son Alexander you mentioned, when was he born?

The only 1851 census I could see is this one at 2 East Lane in Bowmore, with mother down as Isabella and not Catherine:

Isabella McEwen 50 Spinning & knitting b. Kilarrow, argyllsh
Duncan McEwen 21 b. Kilarrow, argyllsh
Peter McEwen 15 b. Kilarrow, argyllsh
Mary Todd 3 boarder b. Glasgow

I think this is Catherine and her two sons in 1861:

Catherine McEwan widow, housekeeper b. Kilarrow (no age showing on the transcript I am looking at)
Duncan McEwan 30 b. Kilarrow
Peter McEwan 24 b. Kilarrow

Address: East Lane, Bowmore

Both sons showing as 'visitors'. Same address as that entry from 1851.

Might be good to check the original image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hi yes I also found the 2 census returns and have taken them as correct even though the mothers age is incorrect on 1. I also queried where Flora was in both 1841 and 1851. It would help if I knew Catherines parents names as I could then tie up whether she was with relatives visiting. I think I found her in 1851 in Bute with a Robert McAlister and Margaret McPherson. However I still cant find Catherine after 1861. There is a Catherine McEwan in Glenorchry, supported by children but this gives birth as Perth and not Argyll. Thank you again for responding.
