RAMC officer in WW1
« on: Friday 09 February 24 08:28 GMT (UK) »
I'm investigating a WW1 officer Dr Bernard George Gutteridge. As a doctor he would have been Royal Army Medical Corps and assigned to other units. There is mention of Chesire and also RFA which I assume is the Royal Field Artillery. It looks like there was some action in Egypt.

I am not familiar with army records from that period - the ancestors I had were all marines. I'm trying to decipher what was going on. What was the purpose of this card? Are there more detailed records available on this man?

My interest in this primarily relates to the address - The Villa, Shardlow, Derby. He was the doctor in the village from 1919 to 1924. I'm struggling find what he was doing prior to coming to the village. He married in April 1915 in London and lists his residence as Jesus College Cambridge.

The house has a strong RAMC connection as the next doctor, Henry Cooke Bell also served during WW1 during his medical degree.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

In the medical registers before 1920, his residence is listed as "Littlecroft" Northlands Road, Southampton.

A lengthy obituary in the Hampshire Advertiser (11 April 1936) includes this paragraph about his war service:

It appears that he was attached to the RFA for the entire war.
1st. mentioned posting was the Cheshire Bde.
2nd. posting was 265 Bde. ( card incorrectly has 365 Bde.)
When the RFA was re-organised the old Bde's. were broken up
moved around & re-numbered.
The Cheshire Bde. became 265 Bde. so remained in the same unit.
The 53rd. Div. of which 265 Bde. belonged never served in France
their first posting was to the MEF Alexandria which is reflected on his card.

Yes that's him thanks.

Out of interest, what is the best newspaper search facility? I did try newspapers.com but never came up with that paper. I maybe need to read the instructions!

Thanks

That's very helpful to know thanks Jim. I guess I need to find his service record. No doubt there's a subscription needed somewhere...

Thanks again.
