15th June 1833, William Wilson married Mary Routledge at Stapleton

then a sequence of events from the register of Nether Knowe Presbyterian:
August 10th 1833: William Wilson and Mary his wife were rebuked before the Session for the sin of ante? nuptial fornication

then later these sequential entries:
James, son of William Wilson and Mary his wife, born at Trough, parish of Stapleton, 25th November 1832 – baptised 14th September 1834
Jane, daughter of William Wilson and Mary his wife, born at Bankend Cottage, parish of Bewcastle, 23rd April 1834 – baptised 14th September 1834

Wondering if I can ask for additional help?

Thanks to all who supplied surname Routledge for Mary spouse of William Wilson

Looking at the links supplied I found several additional children and followed their subsequent data I could source myself

However on the IGI website there are three alternatives for parents of Mary

James Routledge and Jane Richardson
James Routledge and Elizabeth
Robert Routledge and Jane Armstrong

In addition I have also sourced alternative names that could match time line that have been attached to her lineage
They are listed below

Names of children of Mary and William Wilson seemed to suggest Robert and Jane as possible parents but their daughter Mary died 11th June 1852 whereas Mary spouse of William died 11 April 1852

Any help in where to research to resolve this would be greatly appreciated

Also one of the responses mentioned George Routledge of Bankhead Farmstead
Other Ancestors have this area mentioned on officisl data and also Bellbank

Can anyone tell me how to find this George Routledge as none of the descendants of Mary seem to have been giving this  christian  name

Baptisms sourced :-
1) 23 June 1813 - Bewcastle
Father Thomas Routledge and Mother Elizabeth
2) 4 September 1814 Lanercost
Father Joseph Routledge and Mother Isabella
3) 18 August 1813 - Lanercost
Father James Routledge and Mother Jane

Thanks in advance

Anything would be appreciated

Edith K

She says that she was born Lanercost in censuses, so there’s that.

I had also found the August 183 baptism and assumed that was the most likely given that the name of William and Mary’s first daughter matches the mother of Mary in that baptism.

Also it was me who mentioned Bankhead Cottage and George Routledge. However I later added to the post that I got a little carried away because it looks to me as if the abode on the baptism is Bankend Cottage, not Bankhead.

Thank you ….again

Routledge crops up time and time again and so many named Mary making it harder to distinguish between the correct families to add the right parental link

Mary and William Wilson called their son born before they married Robert and Robert Routledge whom married Jane Armstrong seemed the most likely candidate especially as his Father was Leonard Routledge and this name came through the generations of Mary and William Wilson’s descendant but the dates of death for Mary are two months apart and one is listed as 36 on Find a Grave and the other 37 years old

Could this be an error?

On top of that my 6th Great Grandmother Jane Forester who married Simon Kennedy in 1764 was the daughter of Jane Routledge and William Forester

Still trying to establish if Richard Forrester who witnessed Mary Routledge and  William Wilson get married is linked directly to  to branch of Forester/Forrester already in my ancestry

Assuming at that time families were all located in similar area and then married into same local families making multiple links to the Bewcastle Stapleton or Lanercost area
John Kennedy and Dorothy Armstrong my  6th Great Grandparents are buried at St Cuthbert's in Bewcastle  the same graveyard where several Routledge individuals are buried also

Have just checked and I have 7 Mary Routledge in tree from Cumberland area
3 Bewcastle 1 Broughton 2 Haltwhistle and 1 Carlisle

Earliest born circa 1713
So  tend to go in circles looking at data

Many thanks for all your help and comments

Hi Alan

Just a quick note re George Routledge of Bankend

On looking at all the Routledge  names on my tree data i have a George spouse of Hannah Pattinson
They are listed at Burtholm
His parents are shown as George Routledge  and Elizabeth

George and Hannah were in laws of Sybil Little who married William Routledge
George and Hannah also had a son named Isaac

As not familiar to areas within Cumberland not sure if Burtholm would be in same vicinity to Bankend

The son they baptised at the same time as Jane, who was born in 1832 (? I’m typing this from memory) was James. What is the evidence for Robert?

This topic has given me a crash course in the places of northern Cumberland. Since there is basically nowhere of any significant size north of Carlisle, it is quite difficult to research. There is a Burnholme parish but this is just a little north of Carlisle/Brampton, so nowhere near the places that we have been discussing.

As for Bankend, I have only just seen a Bankend marked on a very old map so I need to try to locate it on a ‘better’ map before I can say anything, but if it is the correct place then it is again in the north of the county.

Did you notice that in the census where William is an innkeeper (don’t remember the year) the next two households are also Routledge and I think they give Lanercost as birthplace (again, from memory). I wonder if they are relatives?
