Great finds!

I had wondered why William Reader wasn't present in census but I suppose being a boatman meant he travelled around a lot. There was a William Reader in Warwickshire who was imprisoned and transported in 1838. He was listed as having 4 children, but after doing some digging it was clear that this person's occupation was listed as 'ribbon weaver', not a boatman.

If William Reader went on to marry a Sarah and had a child called Sarah Ann then this would create a possible link to the Sarah Ann witnessing my Mary Ann's marriage.

Looking at the 1841 census, I know that Mary would have been registered as mother's maiden name Wassell. I found her birth registration in 1838, and her mother Amelia Wassell died in 1839.

It looks like you've found the birth for Sarah, but Emma doesn't appear to have been registered. There is an Emma Reader who died aged 1 in Stourbridge in 1842 who might fit.

In 1851, I can't seem to find a birth record for Ellen Jane.

I think this is Ellen Jane but can't see a birth reg for Emma either

 READER, ELLEN  JANE      BADGER
GRO Ref: 1851  M Quarter in ASTON  Volume 16  Page 231

I don't think this family  is related to the birth you found a Mary Ann Reader mmn Wassell  in 1838 in Wolverhampton but is an alternative suggestion for a Mary Reader whose birth wasn't registered

Ah - Just noticed that in the Reader/Wassell family you referred to the father William Reader was also a boatman  based on the 1867 marriage of his daughter Matilda to Thomas Gray who lists her father William as a boatman!!!

Kay

Added - And Enoch and Mary Ann Underwood were witnesses - so the Reader/Wassell must be the right family

So rethinking - you are right apolgies - and Sarah was William Reader's second wife with their first child Sarah Ann and the Elizabeth and Mary living with Sarah in 1841 were children of his first marrage to Amelia.

However can't see his other children from the first marriage  :-\

The siblings if Mary Ann from William's first marriage to Amelia Wassell are as follows:
William Marshall Reader, (1828), Elizabeth Reader & Matilda Reader (1832). Elizabeth's birthday isn't clear because I can't find her in census.

I know Matilda married Thomas Gray. There is a marriage for a William Marshall Reader in Kent in 1878 but it's not clear who he married. A possible?

I can't find a marriage between a William Reader and a Sarah. Possibly didn't marry?

I wonder if Emma was registered as Badger? There is an Emma Badger born in Birmingham in 1841 - S Quarter Vol 16 pg 249. Mother's maiden name isn't listed so could be Badger too?
