John Brown missing from the GRO
« on: Monday 12 February 24 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi ,
This is my first post

I’m struggling to find  my grandfather’s birth in the GRO records. His parents were Nicholas Brown b.1850 in Wexford and his mother was Catherine Daley and I know they emigrated to England around the time my grandfather was born about 1885/6.

I have found a baptism record for 27/5/1885 for a Joannes Brown at St John’s church Liverpool, which I think is correct but I can’t find anything in the GRO index.
It is possible John was born on the journey over here and I wondered if births at sea are recorded differently or if it might have been recorded in the Irish records.
It might, of course just not have been registered but I’d appreciate any suggestions which may help.

Cheers, Rose Red.

Hi there and welcome

What birthplace does he have on census records please?

Did he have younger brothers and sisters you can find birth registrations for?

Also what year did his parents marry?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

If that is the correct one it gives names of the godparents which could be a help.

They also had a daughter Catherine in 1883 who is probably one of the infant deaths in West Derby as she doesn't appear with her mother in 1891.

There is still a fair gap between James and Catherine so perhaps there were more births in Ireland for children who didn't survive.

Thanks very much for all the helpful responses
John’s birthplace is given as Liverpool in all other records.
I’ve found a brother James Brown b. 1878 in Fayth, Wexford and another brother called William in 1875 b in Ireland. His parents married in 1873.
I’m aware of 3 more siblings born in Liverpool, Thomas, b.1887,  Michael b.1889 and Mary b.1891.
I think the GRO record for Thomas looks correct. I couldn’t make out the address on the baptismal record I found for John but the fact that the second child was baptised in the same church makes me think the d.o.b  24.5.1885 given on that record is probably correct.
Is it possible to find out exactly when they came to England. Are there any passenger list records ?

No passenger list records between Ireland and England unfortunately.

The suggestion in reply 3 copied below is certainly the most likely - have you ruled this one out?
