I have an interest in a family of Royal Marines who lived in East Stonehouse from the 1830s. I'm investigating a little about their schooling at the moment. I believe that admissions records for the Stonehouse National School are held at The Box in Plymouth - unfortunately I live up in Derbyshire these days so it's difficult to check these records.
I posted about possible schools elsewhere on RootsChat:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=880337.new#newThe first person of interest is Benjamin Thomas Pope b March 1859 - he was the son of a Royal Marine and at 14 enlisted in the Marines. He appears to have had neat handwriting so had obviously been afforded some education. I wonder if he would have attended the National School?
Benjamin had 7 children: Clara Rosina Pope b1882, Alice May b1884, Ethel Margaret b1885, Albert Edward b1890, Arthur George b1893, Reginald John b1894 and Frederick Charles b 1896.
The census return of 1891 suggest that the children when to school and none worked until the age of 18. The only clue that I have about schooling relates to Albert Pope, who in 1903 aged 13, was given a reference letter from the headmaster of the National School of Stonehouse in which it was stated that he had attended the school for a few years. His father had died suddenly in 1902 and the family underwent significant changes. The 3 youngest boys were sent to the naval orphans school in Greenwich but no doubt attended school locally prior to that.
If anyone could check out the names mentioned in the school registrations that would be great. Potentially Benjamin in the 1860s and his children from the mid 1880s onward might be listed.
Thank you in advance.
Matt
