An ancestor of mine gave his birthplace on censuses from 1851 onwards as Hampton, Warwickshire.  Does anyone know if this is likely to be Hampton in Arden or Hampton on the Hill?  He moved to London and I have not been able to trace his birth around 1813.

RosieG88 how do you get back to this James Smythe, in your personal tree?

Is it through Smythe, Jorey, or someone else?

Just googled this James Smythe of Hampton Warwickshire and somebody has had a go at this on Wikitree and also linked in James Jorey

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smythe-58

Interesting that one of the Wiki Links mentions surname Noyce ...
 ----------
A reply to one of your other general thread questions called "Hornsey Workhouse" mentions an earlier Noyce surname seemingly by chance ...

I thought Levele Smythe might be transcribed wrong in the 1861 Census household of James Smythe.

Levele has several spelling variations, see Jory [Jorey] and M.M.S. Smythe, daughter, born 1873 Seval Sarah Jory (GRO online).

1879, 29th March, St Mary's Church, St Marylebone.
Charles Burbidge, 35, Widower, Brewer's Servant ... married
Sevall Smythe, 25, Spinster, 71 Crawford Street, Father, James Smythe, Carman.

Signed Seevall Smythe, or Seivall (i undotted).

Present as wits: James Smythe; Sarah Jorey; Caroline Jorey (all signed).

Registered GRO online 1853 Dec Quarter,
Saint George Hanover Square, as ...
Ceiviall Smythe
Mother Maiden Surname: Woollaston.

This appears to be Caroline Smythe in 1881?

1881 Marylebone
17a Little Earl Street
Caroline Smythe, Head, W. , 56, Charwoman, born Midd'x , Marylebone.
William Smythe, Son, Unm, 22, Costermonger, born Midd'x , Marylebone.
 ----------
Marriage 1896, 5th March, Parish of St the Evangelist, Kilburn, Middlesex.
William Smythe, 37, Bachelor, General Dealer, 15 Granville Road, Father, James Smythe, deceased.
Harriett Lovett, 43, Widow, 15 Granville Road, Father, William Langley, deceased.

Present as wits, Charlotte Smythe her mark; George Robert Langley.
 ----------
Interesting that ...
James Woollaston Smythe, 21, married a Charlotte Langley in 1875.

Not checked to see if the two Langley are related.
 ----------
Added in 1896 Kilburn (according to the Marriage underneath) at St John the Evangelist, Kilburn, Middlesex.

Thank you again, you have identified the correct family but unfortunately James Smythe's origins remain obscure.  I will follow up the various 'Hampton' locations as suggested.  It seems likely that James Smythe and Caroline Woollaston were not married.  Since James was significantly older than Caroline perhaps he left behind another family in Warwickshire.
The connection with the Noyce family is that James Smythe and Caroline Woollaston's daughter Sarah Ann Smythe married James Jorey and their daughter Grace Jorey married my grandfather Ernest Noyce.
Incidentally the first name Seevall or Seivall was handed down and given to more recent ancestors as Seval.  I have no idea of the origins of this unusual name.

1851 Census St Pancras, Marylebone, Middlesex
Does look like Hampton, Warwick[ ]

Do the childrens Birth Certificates reveal any snippet? I seem to recall one GRO Death Certificate for a child revealing family background, so other records could be searched.

I wonder when and where James Smythe and Caroline married, as that document may have clues about the family?

She may have been a Widow, making it more difficult to find in the GRO Index?

I've heard of an old Birth Certificate saying illegitimate despite a Father and a Mother's Maiden Name given, so an unmarried couple?

Most give the standard information, but without looking you don't know what is recorded or even missed off a Registration Certificate?
