Killegar - Smith - Cullen
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 19:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello! I am quite experienced in family history research but have a few brick walls in my tree that perhaps knowledgeable folks here could help with. I am starting with the Youghal forum because the families all have it in common!

1. Margaret Killegar - my 2nd great-grandmothers - was baptised in 1845 in Youghal, parents Garrett Killegar (1810-1880) and Johanna Walsh Killegar (1809-1891). Unable to find any other information about her including her marriage to Michael Smith (who was deceased by 1899). She was apparently alive in 1899 when her son William was married in Glasgow. I have no idea if she and Michael left Ireland for Scotland or stayed.

2. William Smith - my great-grandfather - family and census records indicate he was born between 1863 and 1867 in either County Cork or County Kerry. I can find nothing about him prior to his marriage in Glasgow in 1899. I have everything I need about him after that date.

3. Thomas Cullen (b1867 Dublin) and Bridget Kelligar Cullen (Margaret's niece, b1860 Youghal) - They were supposedly married in 1883 in Youghal, though it could have been a little later because of Thomas' age. I can find no birth records anywhere of their children, who were apparently all born in Youghal - Maurice b1887, Mary b1888, Anastatia (Hannah) b1889, Thomas b1893, Bridget b1901, Ellen (Nellie) b1902, Christina b1905. There may also have been James b1896 and Annie b1900. The family immigrated to Newfoundland in about 1907.

I have checked many sites such as irishgenealogy.ie, Family Search, Find My Past, Ancestry. I have not paid to join rootsireland.ie because I am not sure if it is worth it to pay for searches.

If anyone has any other suggestions or leads, or knowledge of the families, please reply. Thank you!

Any idea when and where her son William was born?

Should the name be Landers? The records don’t make sense though with the information given by billcs.

1901 -‘Ml’ Landers and sons

Edited to add: Can't yet find a civil birth registration for Maurice, but he was baptised as Maurice John in Youghal RC parish on 13 April 1887, his sponsors were John Cullen and Ellen Power.

Thank you, I don't believe it's the same person as she was a spinster at the time of marriage. Plus the surname is misspelled everywhere in many variations.

William was either born in Grenagh, County Cork, or in County Kerry between 1863 and 1867.

Wow thank you! I wonder why I couldn't find it myself? It never came up in searches. Also, notice the ages, it says Thomas was 21 and Bridget was 19, when he was 7 years younger than her.

Those are indeed them!  I notice that Mary's year of birth was 1885 and not 1888. Maurice was older than her so could possibly have been born in late 1883 or in 1884. I'm sure I did not find these because the last name on most of them is written as "Cullum".
