Parish records for La Châtaigneraie ?
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 23:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm struggling to find exactly where in the departmental archives to find the scanned parish records for La Châtaigneraie (not at all helped by my rusty French.)

I'm keen to look through them because I've recently found this document has been digitised:

https://archives-deux-sevres-vienne.fr/ark:/28387/vtac9e068e51c0cee53/daoloc/0/1?id=https%3A%2F%2Farchives-deux-sevres-vienne.fr%2Fark%3A%2F28387%2Fvtac9e068e51c0cee53%2Fcanvas%2F0%2F96

...which (courtesy of the information about Jean Mandineau on p 96) has nudged me in the direction of La Châtaigneraie for hunting down my Mandineau ancestors, having not had any luck in the records for Moncoutant, which is where I'd thought they'd hailed from.

Can anyone with better French than I have (and / or a better understanding of the local archives) point me in the direction of / share a link to the scanned parish registers for La Châtaigneraie, if such a thing is available online ?

Cheers,

Jenni

(Also, if anyone spots any other interesting research threads worth pulling from that page, please let me know. I'm trying to wrap my head around all the abbreviations within -- I think some refer to other documents (there appears to be an index at the back.) Any advice / tips much appreciated!)

La Châtaigneraie is in the  Vendée.
One nice thing about the Vendée archives is that they do have a name-indexed database
https://www.nomsdevendee.fr/

And indeed here there is a Jean Mandineau baptised La Châtaigneraie 1701
(click on the "Document" link to open the original record).

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

The link I gave does not lead you directly to La Chataigneraies registers .
here's how to find them :

go to archives vendee .fr,  click on Consulter, click on Etat civil et recensements, click on Etat civil; click in the blank space  to make a list appear ,chose la chataigneraie in the list, click on the button OK on the right .

Wonderful! Thank you both so much. :-)

I'll try both the name search and looking through the scanned records manually.

Re the codes and other information, it looks like the X's in column 6 and 11 (key on p 350) mean:

6: a été mauvais converti, catholique preverti [not sure about the exact spelling of this word; it's hard to read], opiniâtre dans la foi reformé, militant, ou membres des églises aux 16ème et 17ème siècles.

11. a quitté le royaume pour la réligion [...]

Does 6 imply a forced abjuration at some point? Or am I misunderstanding "mauvais converti" ?

The other things that look worth me digging into further are the references to writings by Ogilvy and Boudray (I think there's a list of those codes at the start of the book.) Perhaps this is where the reference to La Châtaigneraie is found? (I know that Moncoutant is mentioned in his marriage doc, so that part is clear enough.) It would be great if I can find some slightly more solid link between my Jean in London and any Jean I happen to find in La Châtaigneraie other than this (admittedly very helpful) secondary source.

The comment in the text on the RH page about potentially having come from another place of refuge is interesting too -- I wonder where that information comes from.

Lots of other cool things here if anyone else is looking for Protestant ancestors in the region:

https://archives-deux-sevres-vienne.fr/archive/fonds/FRAD086_3J/view:1009

In particular the typed document "six cents procédures et arrêts anti-protestante en Poitou" is enlightening (no sign of any of my crew in there thus far but what a read.)
