Newly found travelling family Brinkley.
« on: Friday 16 February 24 02:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi , I have found a new second cousin and we are working together . She was bought up being told her gt gt grandmother  Annie Alice nee Brinkley lived in a caravan and was from a travelling family .
My second cousin DNA on ancestry gives her 3  % Romani so it seems the family story has truth to it . I have now found a possible link to the family o. His son in law James Mill was a hawker and Charles a traveller on daughter's Annie's marriage cert .Dated Nov . 1891.
have found a Charles Brinkley who I think is correct in the 1881 census . He and his wife are living in The Folly Caravan  .
There are a few James Mills and before go too far down the rabbit hole is there anyone who can give me some Romani history and where we go from here to have any proof and social history . The family appears to have settled in Edmonton London .
A witness name was Lydia Franklin I think née Welch . Thanks Fred .

I think in 1891 James Mills and Alice were lodging with Abraham and Lydia Franklyn at +Woodville Grove which was the address listed as their address on their wedding cert later that year.   On the marriage cert witnesses listed as Henry Mills and Lydia Franklyn (in 1891  the couples landlady?)

In 1881 there is this family living with other familes in a group of caravans abbutting to Wardle St Wandsworth including a father James, brother Henry and mother Lydia

James Mills   29  Pedlar  Kingston, Surrey
Lydia Mills   28 b Not Known
James Mills   10  Hackney Middlesex
Henry Mills   7 Holloway, Middlesex

James  Mills lists his father as James Mills deceased on his 1891 marriage cert and if the 1881 family includes the correct James there is a possible death for his father below and James landlady in 1891 Lydia Frankyn and witness at his wedding may well have been James mother who moved in with Abraham Franklyn after her husband died??

Death Sep 1883
Mills    James    36    Wandsworth    1d   389

If you do go further with this I think this may be Lydia's parents and family in 1861  at Caravan, Hampton Wick, Kingston, Middlesex at a Pleasure Fair held at the Thames Bank or Barge Walk annually.    The spelling of the surname varies and Lydia's surname was Barrett mmn Penfold when her birth was registered in 1852
