Hi

See reply #18. SS generously obtained the cert..they where living at Rhiw (factory) Llantwit Fadre at the time of birth in 1861. Census was taken a few mths previously.

I have checked Llantwit Fadre district /area 17, which is where it is in 1861. They are not there. I am happy with what SS provided, which led to being able to search correct area and accept they cannot be found on census. But bonus I know where they were.

Thank you for the interest.

Cas

Just to add..

The death that Raybistre flagged up is the correct one, same address as Jane and family in 1871. My lovely granddaughter obtained it to cheer me up as not been 100% well these last few days.

So thank you very much to Raybistre for the information, and everyone who contributed to the thread.

Just waiting on the marriage cert to hopefully confirm fathers names.

In 1868, the parish of Llantwit Fardre contained the following places:
"LLANTWIT FARDRE, (or Llantwit or Llantwitvairdre), a parish in the hundred of Miskin, county Glamorgan, 3 miles N.E. of Llantrisaint, its post town, 3½ from Cowbridge, and 4 W. of Caerphilly. It is situated on the western bank of the river Taff and the Merthyr-Tydvil canal. The Treforest station, on the Taff Vale and Aberdare railway, is a short distance from the village. The parish includes the townships of Newbridge and Treforest, where tin is obtained, in the neighbourhood of Pont-y-Prydd Bridge. Here are collieries and iron-works

Newbridge became known later as Pontypridd

Rhiw is the welsh word for Hill could the address be written in welsh?

I've found a few references in  19th century newspapers to Rhiw Factory and Rhiw Pontypridd so it sounds like a placename that used to be in use

Looking at old maps I can see a small area called Rhiw up the back of Graig, Pontypridd (basically south west of the railway station). What's interesting is down in the side valley floor, as well as Newbridge Colliery, is something marked as Forest Woollen Factory.  James Barnfield, potential father, was a weaver.
