Can anyone please suggest where I should start researching for his birth as there are different locations given on the census
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the place to go.
How old was he in each of those census records?
And what was his occupation?
Where are All Saints (there seem to be several in England) and Ladywood, and where is '384' in 1921?
Did he have more than one child with Elizabeth Lyndon, and what were the names and birth years of all their children?
There were 5 births of James Walkers in Clackmannanshire between 1855 and 1870.
29 February 1856, father Thomas, mother's maiden surname Helen Sorley. This James died in Edinburgh in 1906, so he can be eliminated from your search.
29 January 1859, illegitimate, mmn Ann Walker
24 September 1859, father Thomas, mmn Catherine Wright. This child died in 1860 so he can be eliminated from your search.
30 July 1860 mmn father William, mmn Mary Watson
17 September 1867, father James, mmn Christina Howieson
Assuming that the 1921 census is correct, that leaves three possibles. In many cases the Scottish death indexes state the maiden surname of the deceased's mother, but there can be several reasons why this information is missing, including
- the informant of the death may not have known the maiden name of the deceased's mother
- the mother's maiden name is on the certificate but has not yet been added to the index (the adding of mothers' maiden surnames to the index is an ongoing project)
If, however, the 1901 is correct and he was born in Edinburgh, finding him is going to be much more difficult as there were 55 births of James Walkers in Edinburgh between 1855 and 1870.
Unfortunately English death certificates do not record the names of the parents of the deceased. English marriage certificates give the names of the fathers of the couple, but not their mothers' names. In the absence of any marriage certificate, there is therefore no way of using English certificates to trace James Walker's origins.
