This could well be John on 1901 & 1891 census with mother in law Bridget SWEENEY and married to Mary

Isn’t he with Jane though in 1901?
Or should that be - is he with Jane in 1901?

Yes he is on 1901 census with wife Jane

Piece   3915
Folio   29
Page number   10
John Mc Hugh   48   Head born Ireland
Jane Mc Hugh 42 Wife
Walter Scott 16 Stepson
John Scott 13 Stepson
Mary Scott 11 Stepdaughter
Cath Mc Hugh 5 Daughter
Ann Gorton 58 Sister-in-law

So doubtful that John’s first wife is Mary Sweeney as they are together on 1891 census and mother in law Bridget Sweeney is with them and then widowed John appears on 1901 c with his 4 children and sister Mary - edit to add and this John McHugh was born in Leigh Lancashire not Ireland

Stuck for a birth - whose birth are we supposed to be looking for?

The 1895 marriage cert is on a family tree, John is aged 40, a coal miner, father Patrick is deceased and a general labourer.  His address was 21 Letterewe Street, Wigan.
