Wow! .Thank you all for such quick reply`s  , really appreciate it. The birth I am looking for is Mary Sweeney around 1857 . I suppose Leigh as that is where she married 1874 and died 1895 (Lancashire BMD}. John McHugh wed Jane Brannen 1895 in Wigan and Walter , John and Mary are from her previous marriage to Malcolm Scott

My Gt Grandfather John McHugh born Co Mayo 1854/5 wed Jane Brannen (late Scott) 1895 in Wigan and they are both widowed .

Now for ages I have looked for marriage info on John and found a maybe . I am using Lancashire  B.M.D. , she is Mary Sweeney from Leigh , the marriage is in 1874 Leigh and a death in 1895 when she was 38 .

I have also found a birth in Leigh in 1858 with mother`s maiden name of Conlon but not anywhere else to confirm .

This could well be John on 1901 & 1891 census with mother in law Bridget SWEENEY and married to Mary

As it has been established that your John was not married to Mary SWEENEY, there is another marriage in 1882 to a Mary DONNELLY at Salford, with the father named as Patrick.

https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

There are around 40 marriages in Lancashire for men of the same name in the expected timeframe.  He may have married in Ireland.

Stuck for a birth - whose birth are we supposed to be looking for?

The 1895 marriage cert is on a family tree, John is aged 40, a coal miner, father Patrick is deceased and a general labourer.  His address was 21 Letterewe Street, Wigan.

Thanks for posting those details - on one of the public trees it says father Patrick McHugh born c1813 died 1888 Wigan - no further details

Have you found John in 1881 & 1891 census to see if he is married and who his wife is?

suzi600 - As asked do you have John on either of these census years?

Have brought forward the 1901 census they are living  at 31, Kay Street, Blackburn, Lancashire
John's occupation Sanitary pipe maker.

Who is sister in law Ann Gorton born Liverpool ?
Edited to add I think Ann is Jane’s older sister
