VANDUSEN help
« on: Friday 16 February 24 19:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm trying to locate information for my husbands 2x great grandmother.
Her birth name is Florence Beck.
She married Thomas Stokes in January 1911 in Leicester, England but by the end of January she was a widow.
On the 1911 census shes boarding with her mother and stepfather (Mary and Arthur Foulds) and is listed as a widow with no possible new partner living with her.
By July 1912 she had her first daughter, Phyliss Stokes. No father listed on birth certificate but Florence is listed as the widow of Thomas Stokes on the record.

Now she marries for a second time to a George Deegan (no marriage date found for them yet) but they had their first child together in 1914 in Ontario Canada and I believe George may have been in the Canadian Army during ww2.

They seem to separate or divorce because in 1927 Florence then has a child in Montreal with a Howard Oran Vandusen who was born 1903 in Smith Falls, Lanark, Ontario.

What I would like to find is:
Marriage between Florence and George Deegan.
Marriage between Florence and Howard Vandusen.
Travel documentation for Florence going over to Canada between 1912 and 1914.
And I can't seem to find out where Florence's first daughter Phyliss is between 1912-1939.
Phyliss is documented in England in 1912 on her birth certificate and again on her marriage certificate in 1939 and also on the 1939 register.
Did Phyliss go with her mother to Canada too?

Also to add, Phyliss isn't named on her mother's obituary. All Florence's other children are.

Thank you

You likely have this but posting for others searching...
(James) Howard Oran Van Dusen of 215 Fifth Avenue died Friday after a lengthy Illness, age 50. He was sales manager for Ernest Cousins Dairy, Montreal

Sadly buried with married name rather than maiden name

Found an online tree with an obit that says they married 1923 in Hamilton, Ont. Canada

Deleted CEF info as not correct...     Found no Deegan/Stokes marriage as yet. Is there one?
adding:

birth 1911 England  parents  Geo. Deegan  &  Florence Stokes
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-694S-NJ7
FreeBMD shows a birth registered Jun 1910 - an Ivy DEEGAN  W. Derby

Frank Hamilton Deegan   Birth  14 months  (241 Grosvenor Ave.)  Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

A first marriage, perhaps in 1903 ??? https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP44-9CMG
1891 census has him b. Birth  1886 - birth reg. 1886 Leicestershire, England
adding:   Blimey... FreeBMD shows he had two children who died young...and another in 1912 just before he headed to Canada? So was Ivy hers with another?
You can find what is likely another marriage ( 1940 census with a wife) & his death in U.S.

Florence Deegan age 23 left Liverpool  arrived St John's Newfoundland on 31 January 1913
her daughter is with her Ivy Deegan age 1 1/2

Ship Empress of Ireland.
Ref: ancestry
-----------------
So she left Phyllis behind in England.
Could she have been cared for by one of Florence's sisters perhaps after they married ?

It also explains why she is not mentioned on her mother's obituary, the other children did not know she existed.
