There are no family names mentioned in the newspaper, but he left a will, so it would be getting a copy if that.

using the free search on the 1921 census, in the same household as Joshua Cartwright in Bury is an Agnes Lone b. 1876 Dukinfield and Frank Cartwight b. 1876 Dukinfield.

Bit too much of a coincidence?

Probate was granted 23 rd April  1923  To Arthur Edward GRUNDY Solicitor and  William CLOUGH  manager of paper works. He left a considerable amount of money for the times.

The census image is clearly daughter Agnes LANE.

Agnes born Dukinfield Cheshire.  When on census with father living Bury Lancashire.

ShaunJ has posted that father Joshua wasn't shown as deceased on the marriage.

The father of this Agnes wasn't deceased.

Any other info that might help?  Is there an occupation given for her father?  This one was a civil engineer employer.

Thanks and you and SJ are correct - not deceased at time of marriage in 1903. I have no details of occupation
I lived in Ardwick, Manchester in the early 1960s as a small child and much travelling of the world has now led me to want to know more about my roots. Carter, Beckwith, Connolly, Heron and Kelly are all names that form part of my family tree.

1921 Census confirms Agnes Lane living with father Joshua and brother Frank. So thats her family traced.
I imagined that an English woman who married in India at that time would have come from a well to do family.
Ironically, the 1921 Census states that they were living on Walmersley Road, Bury which is where I lived about 30 years ago........... :) :)
I wonder what she was doing in India? She was still in the UK in 1891 and future husband George didn't arrive in India until the mid 1890's.

There is no mention of any employment for Agnes in 1901. Considering her father’s well paid occupation and that he was also an employer, it is unlikely that  Agnes would have need to work.

A lot of young unmarried women at that time went out to India in search of a husband, there was a great demand for young British women. There is  a an interesting book by Anne De Courcey, The Fishing Fleet, Husband Hunting in the Raj.

It was said that those women who failed to find a husband out there, when they came home they were referred to as “Returned Empties.”

Thanks,
An interesting way to find a husband. I guess that they would have had some contacts in India as its hard to imagine going out there wsithout there being at least one relative or friend already there. Her future husband was from London and I dont have any evidence that they knew each other before India.
