Graveyard in front of Providence Chapel (URC) Ovenden, Halifax, Yorkshire
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 15:06 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what happened to the tombstones that used to stand in front of Providence Chapel?
It is now laid to grass, but I have seen an old photo showing these stones.
Are there any records of what used to be there?

They may have been placed alongside the boundary wall, I know that is the case in many churchyards. I have seen that in several Anglican churchyards, it is also the case at the URC Church I was married in.

The chapel records appear to be at the Calderdale branch of West Yorkshire Archives in Halifax. This is the catalogue entry for them - click on 'Collection' about halfway down to see a detailed list.

I didn't look at everything, but under Registration there are Registers of Graves as well as of Burials, and Burial Ground will have most of the other material. Correspondence and Minutes might also include items about the clearance of graves. The archives staff may well be able to advise further about what's available.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Many thanks, that's very helpful. I'll try contacting the Archives in Halifax initially. Looks like another visit to Halifax may be needed...
I'm still very interested to know what happened to the tombs - some looked quite substantial.
