John Clegg shopkeeper in Soothill
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 13:46 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor John Clegg 1799 - 1859 who was a grocer/shopkeeper/clothier in Soothill.
1841 Piece 1268 Book 14 Folio 19 Page 3
1851 Piece 2325 Folio   146 Page number 7
Living at Commonside Earlsheaton both censuses.

Does anyone know how I can find out where the shop was, any photographs of Soothill first half of 19th century, how long John had it & who took over after he died?

I have located Rates books for Dewsbury and Thornhill which I will try to get to see sometime at WYAS in Huddersfield. However Soothill only goes from 1910 - where would it be before that?

I have found an 1853 Gazetteer with John Clegg grocer in Soothill. There is no column heading for the figure on the left - any ideas?

ADDED: I looked on previous page and the number indicates where they resided.

Hi
There are some Land tax records for Soothill on A*
Soothill Nether
1828 owned Jessop Adam executors  rented
                                                      Benjamin Butler house
                                                      Thomas Page house
                                                       Joseph Woodcock  house
                                                      John Clegg house
1831 same except Joseph Woodcock replaced by William Newsome.
John Cleggs rent 4 1/2 d

1832 the same
He was also there in 1826 and 1827 , but before that it was Benjamin Scott in 1824.

I'd be surprised if there was more than one John Clegg in Soothill so it looks like him.He was buried Dec 1858 at Earlsheaton if that helps.
There doesn't see to be records for Soothill after 1832.

Thank you, very interesting. I should have put in a link to a previous post about John Clegg
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=847948.0
which talks about his death, burial [see reply #11] and coroner's inquest.

'John Clegg shopkeeper' was given as father on the 1840 marriage of Elizabeth Clegg my G G Grandmother. She said variously on censuses that she was born in Ysrkshire or Huddersfield.

I will see what else I can turn up in the W Y Archives.
